Grand Canyon Trails with Dr. Q:

This collection of more than 600 photographs beautifully captures a glimpse of the Grand Canyon rarely seen by most visitors as you follow the pathways from Bright Angel and South Kaibab trailheads along the South Rim all the way down to the infamous Phantom Ranch. The distance between any two pictures isn’t greater than one tenth of a mile, which creates a complete pictorial representation of the Grand Canyon that is rarely seen. Each picture is in sequential order following the pathway of the trails accompanied by GPS coordinates, current elevation, distance from each picture and significant points, in addition to the total mileage traveled. The emphasis is to capture the experience of what it is like to hike, or ride a mule, on the trails and how to negotiate each section while being surrounded by this rugged natural wonder of the world and its spectacular beauty.

Background:

The majority of the photographs of the Grand Canyon capture lovely panoramas close to 80% percent from the South Rim, 10% percent from the North Rim, and 10% percent from the bottom of the Canyon including the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch. What seems to be missing is everything in between, especially the trails, and the amazing diversity and unique terrain deep in the Canyon. Some of those variations include steep narrow switchbacks to enormous expanses of wide open panoramas, and low lying cactus with lite colored high desert landscapes to deep rusty red finely pulverized soil that support windblown carved columns reaching high into the sky. Why is it I haven’t seen photographs that bring those experiences to light and provide people with a visual sampling of what it is truly like to be on the trails and hike the Grand Canyon?

With that question in mind, I set out to photograph the Grand Canyon in a way I’ve never seen before. The trail needs to be the theme and appear in every photo, from wide sweeping panoramas to tightly framed shots with focused detail. The intention is not to reproduce a video of hiking the trail, but to capture images of significant and identifiable locations throughout the entire hike, and share with the viewer the sensations as if you could reach out and touch the rock formations and feel the Earth under your feet.
